Coronavirus (COVID-19)

If you are planning on travelling distance to attractions, we would recommend that you contact the venues directly in advance to avoid disappointment.

If you, or any of your party have a new persistant cough, or develop a fever of 38C, we would instead advise you to use the NHS's dedicated website for professional advice.

Hopewell Colliery Museum

A working colliery and museum set in the midst of the glorious Forest of Dean.
Hopewell is a working coal mine owned and run by Robin Morgan, a freeminer of the forest.
Freemining is an ancient right bestowed by Edward 1st on those born within a specific area of the Forest of Dean.
Today Hopewell offers a unique visitor experience in that you can actually visit the mine workings. See how coal, the power source of Britain for many centuries, is mined. Understand the extreme conditions that miners have to work in, even today!
Your guided tour will take about 45 minutes and will take you underground and through the mine workings. Your guide (if you are lucky it will be Robin himself) will explain how everything works and take you along an interesting route. You will then emerge into the tranquility of the Forest of Dean and after a short walk find yourself back at the Hopewell tea room and shop where you can enjoy freshly made local produce and a relaxing beverage, or just browse through the shop and its adjoining museum.
